While houses throughout the country wake up to lawnmowers and weed whackers buzzing all spring and summer long, there are many lawn care tasks you should continue doing through the year. If you are really committed to setting your lawn apart from the rest, here are five easy lawn care tasks to do year-round for a beautiful lawn every day of the year.
Test Your Soil
Before you can plan out your lawn care tasks, you need to make sure that you are properly treating the soil and grass that make up your yard. Find a soil testing lab close to where you live and submit a sample, according to their guidelines, and wait for the results to see how you should adjust your lawn.
Balance the pH
Once you get the soil test results, you will know the actual chemical makeup of your yard’s soil. For reference, cool season grasses perform the best at a pH between 6.2-7.0. If your soil pH is fine, you can move onto other lawn care tasks. If your pH is too low, adjust the pH by adding dolomitic limestone. If your pH is too high, lower it with aluminum sulfate.
Start Early with Fertilizer
A lawn care task that everyone knows about is fertilizer. Keep track of your soil temperature and wait until temperatures are high enough before treating your lawn with fertilizer. Crabgrass can start to grow between 53-60 degrees soil temperature, so keep an eye on your lawn.
Fight Against Crabgrass
Crabgrass will always appear, no matter how hard you try to prevent it from growing. Nothing you apply to your lawn will be able to stop it from growing. However, a crabgrass treatment will help to get your lawn off to a good start at the start of the season.
Keep Grubs Under Control
Last but not least, a good lawn requires staying on top of grubs throughout the year. Grubs do not attack lawns that are off-color or thin. Instead, they typically choose lush and green lawns.
